What Is Zircon and is it natural?

Zircon is a natural mineral composed primarily of zirconium silicate (chemical formula: ZrSiO₄). Unlike cubic zirconia, which is a synthetic material, zircon occurs naturally in the Earth’s crust. It has been cherished and worn since ancient times, making it a gemstone with a rich history. While initially I was hesitant to purchase zircon because of the name. I decided to go for it because of the amazing fire of these gemstones have. I am very happy I did as they have colors similar to a Paraiba tourmaline with the brilliance of a diamond.

Colorful Varieties

Zircon comes in a wide range of colors, each with its unique allure:

  • Blue Zircon: Perhaps the most popular and expensive variety, blue zircon exhibits vibrant hues. However, it’s essential to note that almost all blue zircons are heat-treated.

  • Green Zircon: The rarest natural color, green zircon captivates with its bright, lush shades.
  • Yellow to Orange: This warm-toned zircon adds a touch of sunshine to jewelry.
  • Other Colors: Zircon can also appear in shades like red, brown, and even colorless.

Quality Factors

When evaluating zircon, consider the following factors:

  • Color: Vivid, saturated colors are highly desirable.
  • Clarity: Zircon may have inclusions, but they can enhance its character.
  • Dispersion: Zircon’s high dispersion (fire) gives it a dazzling play of colors.
  • Cut: Well-cut zircons maximize their brilliance.

Zircon vs. Cubic Zirconia

Despite their similar names, zircon and cubic zirconia are distinctly different:

  • Chemical Composition: Zircon has a chemical formula of ZrSiO₄ + Fe, U, Th, Hf, and forms in the tetragonal crystal system. In contrast, cubic zirconia (CZ) has a chemical formula of ZrO₂ and forms in the isometric or cubic crystal system.
  • Natural vs. Synthetic: Zircon is a natural gemstone, while cubic zirconia is an artificial product that never occurs in nature.

Birthstone and Jewelry

Zircon is one of the modern December birthstones. When set carefully, it looks stunning in jewelry. Whether as a pendant, or earrings, zircon adds elegance and sophistication.

In summary, zircon is a magnificent and underrated gemstone that deserves recognition beyond its confusing name. Next time you encounter a dazzling blue or vibrant green zircon, appreciate its natural beauty and unique properties!
